Published

on

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, on Saturday called on Muslims to look for the new moon of Ramadan 1440A.H.

Mr Abubakar made the call in a statement by Sambo Junaidu, the Chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto.

Mr Junaidu said “this is to inform the Muslim Ummah that Sunday, May 5, which is equivalent to 29 day of Sha’aban 1440A.H., shall be the day to look for the new moon of Ramadan 1440A.H.

“Muslims are, therefore, requested to start looking for the new moon of Ramadan 1440AH on Sunday and report its sighting to the nearest district or village head for onward communication to the Sultan.”

The monarch prayed to Allah to help religious leaders and all Muslims in the discharge of their religious duties.

He further said the general public could report the sighting of the new moon directly to the Sultan through the following phone numbers;
08037157100, 07067416900, 08066303077, 08065480405, 08035965322, 08036149757 and 08035945903.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar in which the Muslims conduct the compulsory full month fasting.

UN Retracts Claim 110 Died in Borno Boko Haram Attack

Published

on

The United Nations on Monday recanted an earlier claim that 110 farmers were killed by suspected Boko Haram insurgents in Zabarmari community, Borno State.

The Borno State government had said at least 43 farmers lost their lives in an attack by insurgents on a rice field.

On Sunday, the Borno governor, Babagana Zulum, had during a mass burial of the deceased farmers, told journalists that 43 farmers were killed.

Later on Sunday evening, the UN issued a statement which quoted the head of the UN System in Nigeria, Edward Kallon, saying that at least 110 farmers were killed in the said attack.

The UN version of the death toll from Koshobe rice field went viral.

In the initial UN statement, signed by Eve Sabbagh, UN’s Head of Public Information at the OCHA in Nigeria, Mr Kallon said he was “outraged and horrified by the gruesome attack against civilians carried out by non-state armed groups in villages near Borno State capital Maiduguri.”

He added that “at least 110 civilians were ruthlessly killed and many others were wounded in this attack.”

Withdrawal

In a new release on Monday, the UN said its initial statement was inaccurate.

The UN’s head, public information, said the earlier numbers quoted by Mr Kallon were not correctly sourced.

In an email circulated to reporters, Ms Sabbagh asked journalists to disregard the earlier statement.

“Please note the number of 110 civilians killed on Saturday’s attack is an unconfirmed number and the correct version of the statement by the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator is the one published yesterday on Reliefweb and used on OCHA Nigeria’s Twitter account:

In the fresh statement, the humanitarian agency replaced the portion where it quoted “110 deaths” with “unspecified figure”.

This time around, Mr Kallon was quoted saying “tens of civilians were ruthlessly killed and many others were wounded in this attack.”

The remaining paragraphs of the one-paged statement remained the same.

The UN did not, however, add how it got the earlier figure it released and which was quoted by at least one international media outlet.

Meanwhile, sources in Zabarmari had confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that a search party was still combing the bushes for other missing farmers at the time our reporter visited the farm.

“The number of death remains the same,” he said. “We have not had any other corpses other than the 43 we buried yesterday; even though we know about 70 farmers were involved in the incident.”

Nigeria’s electricity grid on Sunday experienced multiple tripping, leading to the collapse of the system, an official of the Transmission Company of Nigeria(TCN) has said

Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, said this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday.

According to her, TCN regrets to inform electricity consumers nationwide that at 11:25 a.m. today, the nation’s electricity grid experienced multiple tripping, which led to the collapse of the system.

Mrs Mbah said TCN had since commenced grid restoration; power has been successfully restored to every part of the country, except Calabar, Ugwuaji, Markurdi, Jos, Gombe, Yola and Maidugiri axes.

“Effort is, however, ongoing to ensure full restoration nationwide.

“We regret the inconvenience this has caused electricity consumers. Investigations would be conducted to establish the immediate and remote cause(s) of the multiple trippings as soon as the grid is fully restored.

“Considering that the grid had been relatively stable in the last couple of months,” she said.

Opinion: Think About It

Published

By Tolulope A. Adegoke

“Your decision empowers your mission, based on the vision you have been exposed to; it now takes your willful activation of it, by a well-strategized action towards fulfilling its desired intention. Don’t give up trying, don’t give up at all. You can always be the very best you intend to be.”Tolulope A. Adegoke

If you don’t give it a thought, you may never have it.

If you have never followed faithfully, you can hardly lead successfully.

And if you have ever led successfully, then you should be able to follow faithfully.

I charge you to think! The things you do under the umbrella of “it does not matter”, have given others what to think about you. Be a thinking king!

It is not actually getting the job that matters, it is having what you need to keep the job.

Think! Life gives you two options in all of its situations, and you can only choose one; think before you choose!

Every phase in life prepares us for the next stage, and every leader was once a follower; think!

If your attitude does not recommend you, it will definitely reject you, I charge you to think!

If you are too cheap, if you are too expensive, things and people will never come your way; even if they come your way, they won’t stay. I charge you to think!

The things you like so much will always be your tempting point, think!

If you are too proud, you will not get everything you deserve, think!

If you will be at the top someday, you must give it a thought this day, think!

Can I ask you this question, if you are handed power to rule as president of your beloved country, corporate head of institution, will it succeed or fail?

If it will succeed, how? And if it will not, why? Just think about it, because every action you make now comes with a decision.

Your decision empowers your mission, based on the vision you have been exposed to; it now takes your willful activation of it, by a well-strategized action towards fulfilling its desired intention.

Don’t give up trying, don’t give up at all. You can always be the very best you intend to be.
