Officials of the Ministry of Police Affairs, Internally Generated Revenue Desk Officers in the Police Commands and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), have held a brainstorming session in Enugu on the challenges of revenue and how to improve sources of revenue generation in the police ecosystem.

The conference organized by the Ministry of Police Affairs with the theme “Evaluation of Internally Generated Revenue in the Ministry”, according to a statement signed by the Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations, Mr. Bolaji Kazeem, and made available to the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP), brought together Desk Officers from Police Commands from each geo-political zone of the country and facilitators from Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

The Permanent Secretary, Mr. James Sule, represented by the Director of Finance and Accounts, Mr. Okehie Isaac Tochukwu, pointed out that the conference provides another opportunity to examine the impact assessment of the internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

“By examining our achievements in the past months on the internally generated revenue (IGR) for the police ecosystem and looking at the possible ways to align with the new priority of the present administration on the unification of revenue collection functions into a single agency is significant,” he said.

He revealed that President Bola Tinubu has mandated everybody in the revenue generation MDAS to be up and doing to improve the revenue drive to tackle developmental projects in the country.

According to him “This conference is essential to this nation as the Ministry of Police Affairs occupies a critical position in the process of improving revenue. We are expected to listen attentively to the experts and learn how to improve on the revenue generation of the Ministry which would benefit the nation.”

He acknowledged a vital role in maintaining transparency, accountability, and sound financial management in the security sector adding that their work ensures that resources are allocated effectively, and their expertise in financial oversight is crucial to the success of policing efforts.

The Permanent Secretary urged them to leverage data intelligence to curb revenue loss and imbibe a culture of professionalism and accountability to improve their revenue drive.

James stressed the need to uphold the principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability which is paramount to winning the trust and confidence of stakeholders in the country.

Professor Abdulhamid Ozohu-Suleiman who is one of the facilitators at the conference expressed that the economic development and sustainability of any country depends largely on its revenue profile and the capacity to harness the various sources available to it.

He added that the task of generating revenue sufficient to discharge the mandate of governance in Nigeria is quite challenging noting that leadership failure is largely indicated in the numerous challenges of revenue generation and utilization in Nigeria.

Earlier, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olusegun Kayode Egbetokun, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Accounts and Budget, DCP Arotu Pere, stated that the Police is not a major revenue agency of the Federal Government but there is a need to articulate revenue base.

He recalled that approval has been given to the Police by the Federal Executive Council on July 14, 2021, for the POLICE SPECIALIZED SERVICES AUTOMATION PROJECT (POSSAP) towards generating revenue from the Fingerprint, Tinted Glass Permit; VIP Orderly and Escort; Assets/Specie Escort; International Driving Permit; Firearms & Ammunition Licenses; among others.

Hardship: TUC Threatens Nationwide Strike

Published

on

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has expressed concern over the rising pressure on workers’ welfare and economic conditions of the country.

The Congress warned that it would embark on nationwide protest, if there is no improvement.

The warning was conveyed in in a communiqué jointly signed by the TUC President, Mr. Festus Osifo, and Secretary-General, Mr. Nuhu Toro, at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja.

The Congress said the NEC meeting reviewed the state of the nation, developments within the congress, preparations for the 2026 May Day celebration, and other critical issues affecting Nigerian workers.

“The prevailing economic hardship has significantly affected the living standards of Nigerian workers, making daily survival increasingly difficult.

“We are closely monitoring the situation, and if there is no improvement, the congress will have no option but to mobilise workers in defence of their welfare.

“Government must urgently take concrete steps to address the rising cost of living and restore confidence in the economy,” it said.

The Congress said rising fuel prices, inflation, electricity tariff increases and insecurity had combined to erode workers’ purchasing power and living standards.

It noted that global developments, including the Iran–U.S. conflict, were further worsening economic pressures through higher energy costs and supply chain disruptions.

According to the TUC, Nigerian workers have not benefited from higher global oil prices but continue to face rising costs of transportation, food and essential services.

It urged the Federal Government to deploy excess crude revenue to cushion economic shocks and support vulnerable citizens.

The congress also called for urgent measures to stabilise fuel prices, improve electricity supply, and address insecurity nationwide.

It emphasised the need for policies that promote decent work, job security and social protection.

“The government must prioritise the welfare, dignity and security of Nigerian workers in all policy decisions,” it said.

The TUC further called for tax relief for manufacturing companies and workers to ease economic pressure and stimulate productivity.

On electricity, it condemned repeated tariff increases without improved service delivery and demanded fair pricing, universal metering, and an end to estimated billing.

The congress expressed concern over rising insecurity, describing it as a major threat to economic activities and workers’ safety.

It urged government at all levels to adopt coordinated, intelligence-driven strategies to protect lives, farms, businesses and critical infrastructure.

“A stitch in time saves nine,” the communiqué added.
